We built our kiln with furniture makers in mind. The kiln dramatically speeds up the drying time of wood slabs from a couple years to only a few weeks. Not only does the kiln drying process dramatically increase the drying time it also kills any bugs which live in the wood. Our kiln is fabricated from a repurposed, insulated van body. We framed and insulated the body, installed 3 fans for plenty of air flow and a heater and dehumidifier. The kiln is temperature controlled to ensure the slabs dry at an even temperature, a crucial factor as it prevents case hardening (the outside of the wood drying faster than the inside, resulting in trapped moisture in the wood). The size of the kiln Inside is 18ft x 6ft x 5ft, Kiln drying is $25 per day with a minimum of 7 days, the average drying time for 2” thick slabs is 21 days.
